A fun ride that's a little rough at times!

I have to admit that I am not quite familiar with board games and so this review will be written by someone who's not familiar with the whole characters or setting of the game. As a movie lover, I quite enjoyed my time with this film. Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves follows a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers who undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

Michelle Rodriguez (Holga Kilgore) and Chris Pine (Edgin Darvis) in Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Let's start with what doesn't work here. First off, I think that the story needs a lot more work. It's predictable, messy at times, and may leave you unsatisfied. The villain was in my opinion a weak character with not-so-great intentions. It's honestly an Eternal case here where the big villain is revealed at the very last moment, therefore, ruining the film. Secondly, I feel that the story is a little rushed and bites off more than it can chew which made for a messy yet fun adventure. Why fun? I personally loved the whole whimsical setting and the interesting and funny characters. On that note, I have to admit that the movie made me laugh a couple of times and I think that's what will keep the audience entertained. My only wish for the sequel is to have a better villain and double down on the jokes as well as up the drama a bit. That leads me to the drama which did not land at all! Chris Pine's delivery of some of the lines is honestly cringe-worthy.

Hugh Grant (Forge Fitzwilliam) and Chloe Coleman (Kira) in Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Whenever an important emotional scene is on screen it's ruined by Pine's delivery or by some weak writing which took away from my enjoyment.Nonetheless, I still liked his performance as much as his co-stars. Michelle Rodriguez was great and had an okay chemistry with Pine. Sophia Lillis, Justin Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant carried this film with their performances. What carried this film for me were the excellent CGI and action sequences. The action sequences in this film were so cool and were amazingly choreographed. The satisfying sound design in those sequences added to the coolness factor and to the brutality in a way. Of course, those cool sequences couldn't have been achieved without some convincing CGI which was thankfully excellent here. Everything and I mean everything CG here was seamless and extremely well-polished. The CGI mixed with the great score was a feast for my eyes and ears!

I am glad that I had a fun and overall great time with this one because I absolutely can't wait for the sequel. There's a lot of interesting that they could explore in this fascinating and riveting universe. I really can't recommend this enough for anyone looking to watch a fun movie or for the fans of the game. Oh, and that cameo was definetly unexpected and hilarious.
