An underwhelming yet fun experience

Ever since they started marketing for this film, I was not excited to watch it due to it looking like a hot mess. Well, I was proven wrong because it was nowhere near catastrophic as I thought it'll be. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts follows the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons who join the existing battle on Earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

Dominique Fishback (Elena) and Anthony Ramos (Noah) in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)

The Transformers are known to have an over-top mediocre story with some bombastic and explosive action sequences which is exactly what you're getting here. As I said, the story is dumb, generic, and kind of fun. Trust me, if you're willing to turn your brain off then you'll certainly enjoy this! What I wished the story explored more were the maximals since the movie is titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. They're barely in the movie and appear near the end which was disappointing, to say the least. Of course, no one goes to watch these movies for the story. We watch them for the action sequences. Well, you'll be more than happy to know that the action sequences were awesome and had tons of explosions but not as many as Bay's films. They were thrilling and kept me entertained for most of the runtime.

Pete Davidson (Mirage) and Anthony Ramos (Noah) in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)

Speaking of the runtime, I think this movie is a bit too long and dragged a bit at times. In my opinion, this could have easily been a fun film if it clocked around 90 minutes. What I did enjoy here other than the action were the performances. Peter Cullen is back as Optimus Prime and he has never sounded better than this. Pete Davidson on the other hand absolutely crushed it as Mirage which was a surprise to me since I don't enjoy most of his performances. Moreover, Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback did a great job too. Of course, credits should also go to the rest cast who did an equally great job as their co-stars. Overall, if you're looking for an excuse to dive back into the Transformers universe then this film is a fine way to jump back in. It does the job but might leave you unsatisfied.
