A generic and not so scary film!

Insidious is considered one of the biggest franchises in the horror genre and this year Patrick Wilson made his directorial debut with the 5th film in the franchise. "Insidious: The Red Door" follows Josh and a college-aged Dalton who must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.

Patrick Wilson (Josh Lambert) in Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

Let's discuss what doesn't work in the film here. For starters, the writing was excruciatingly bad. It made for some wonky dialogues here and there and made the story feel lazy and tedious. I just wished that throughout those 107 minutes, the film would have gone into more detail instead of focusing on making us terrified with those jumpscares. On that thought, those jumpscares were probably the worst I've ever seen in a horror film! They were cheap and were weirdly placed in the film. Moreover, I wanted to discuss the lack of tension in the film. In those so-called "tense sequences" the film fails to create a scary and gloomy atmosphere and the reason why is the PG-13 rating. If you know me by now, I hate it when horror films aim for a PG-13 rating instead of a hard R. In my opinion, the film could have been much scarier and darker in some parts which would have ultimately made a slightly better film. The pacing also made the film feel boring at times and detracted from my overall enjoyment. Furthermore, the film felt a little unnecessary and acted more like a cash grab which is disappointing, to say the least.

Ty Simpkins (Dalton Lambert)  in Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

On the bright side of things, I have to mention Patrick Wilson's directorial debut. Sure, the film is rough, but Wilson shows his intimacy to the project and to the franchise. I wouldn't mind seeing him direct another Insidious film. Praise should also go towards the cast. Patrick Wilson was great as the father figure here and Ty Simpkins did a really good job too. It's also worth mentioning that I enjoyed the father-son relationship here. Overall, if you're looking for a horror film to pass some time then look no more.
