Cast & Crew
An explosively fun time at Barbie Land!
Greta Gerwig is who I consider the best woman director. When I heard that she was directing a film based on Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, my hype went through the roof. Well, how did "Barbie" end up being? "Barbie" follows Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

My first worry when thinking of this film was how they were going to handle the story here. Thankfully, they did not mess it up and made it interesting from begging to end. It went into some very unexpected ways and I liked that. Sure, the message might seem extreme, but that tells a lot about our society and how women are treated in it. It explored many themes and I bet that those themes will resonate with audiences of all ages. It has something for everyone. At the end of the day, it's a Barbie movie made to empower women and I do not have a problem with that. It's clever, very funny, and surprisingly heartfelt. Talking about comedy, this is one of the best comedies of the year. The jokes worked perfectly and loved how self-aware the movie felt. On that thought, I absolutely loved The META commentary here. It made the film feel more mature and funnier. The last 30 minutes had two particular jokes that were extremely funny. Where's the heartfelt part, you ask? Well, the last 10 minutes brought an emotional layer that I wasn't ready for. It was the cherry on top for me and solidified the film for me. Praise should also go to the phenomenal cast. Margot Robbie gives one of her best performances here. This woman keeps surprising me with every new performance. She always commits to the role and gives her A-game in every movie she's in. Ryan Gosling as Ken was phenomenal. He is an actor who I qualify as a pure comedic genius. I can't help but laugh every time he makes a certain joke.

All of the Barbies and Kens did a phenomenal job but the standout was Allan. Why Alan? Well, because he's just Allan! Micheal Cera brought the discontinued doll to life with his charismatic and overall fantastic performance. Furthermore, I have to mention America Ferrera's performance. She was awesome in it and that monologue near the end was excellent. She pairs perfectly with Margot and they both made for a funny and fantastic duo. What made this film feel so extraordinary for me was the set design. Greta wasn’t joking when she described it as a big party for everyone. Wow! It's one of the most beautiful sets that I have laid my eyes on. It was oozing with pink and energy! Every nook and cranny of Barbieland is covered with pink and your eyes will be feasting when watching this film. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it got nominated for best production design at the Oscars. The film's visuals are enhanced by the unique effects and the intricate attention to detail by Greta Gerwig. Firstly, those effects really added to the uniqueness of the film. I really don't want to spoil them but those really added more life to the film and really made me immersed.

Secondly, I have to praise Gerwig's attention to detail here. Barbie's funhouse is full of details and how she dresses up or how she takes a shower is just like you remember. Finally, I have to mention that fantastic score. "I'm Just Ken" in particular is a masterpiece. It's got big Kenergy and will help you find the hidden Kenergy inside you! Praise should also go towards the rest of the artists for bringing their A-game, particularly Billie Eilish. Hearing "What was I made for?" for the first time in theaters while watching the ending sent chills all over my body. Overall, "Barbie" is not only the best feel-good film of the year but one of the best films of this year.
