A boring and messy sequel!
I remember watching "The Meg" and being underwhelmed by how bad the film turned out to be. Since the launch of the trailer for the sequel, I kept "Meg 2: The Trench" under my radar. The trailer looked fun and I actually had some hopes for it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a messier film than its predecessor. "Meg 2: The Trench" follows Jonas Taylor who leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Suddenly, their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival.

First off, let's talk about that script! I don't know what went on in the writers' room here but the script was one of the worst and messiest scripts I've seen this year. It's messy, boring, and completely illogical. Secondly, and I hate to break it to you but you unfortunately won't be getting your money's worth when watching this film. You have to wait for 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to the fun part and even the fun part doesn't make up for it. The end result is a messy and lackluster sequel! Furthermore, I would like to mention that you'll probably have an eyesore during the first 2 acts completely set in the darkness underwater. The ugly CGI combined with the boring moments made for a very unpleasant experience at the theater. Additionally, the "character drama" was basically non-existent I honestly don't remember when I was this frustrated and disappointed by a film with such an interesting premise and a great cast. Moreover, the film could have hugely benefited from an R rating. The kill count was low and underwhelming due to the PG-13 rating. The only gore that you'll see is on the sea creatures.

The only thing that I enjoyed was the last 30 minutes. They were fun but sadly did not make up for the first 2 acts. What made me stick with this film till the end were the performances. Jason Statham still gives the same performance as any other film he's been in but I'm not complaining. It suits him and it's entertaining to see him perform on screen. Melissanthi Mahut was excellent and wish that her character had more time to shine. Page Kennedy did an equally great job too and made me laugh in those last 30 minutes. Despite those fun final 30 minutes, I really cannot recommend The Meg 2: The Trench to any viewer expecting to be entertained for nearly 2 hours.
