A fitting end to a solid trilogy!
"The Equalizer" franchise is one of my favorite franchises and I always look forward to each entry. Since the third film's announcement, I was extremely happy to know that "The Equalizer 3" was the final chapter in the trilogy. "The Equalizer 3" follows Robert McCall finds himself in Southern Italy. He soon discovers new friends who are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
What makes "The Equalizer" franchise so popular is the brutal and excellent action sequences and let me tell you they did NOT disappoint when it came to the action. Simply put "The Equalizer 3" is Denzel Washington going full John Wick on some Italian mobs and boy oh boy was it not fun! The action was brutal, grounded, and tense which left me more than satisfied. What unfortunately did not satisfy me was perhaps the generic story. Don't get me wrong it's great but I wish that it had a stronger and better villain. His screentime is minimal and so is his interaction with McCall. On the bright side of things, I absolutely loved the score used here. I liked how the score leaned more into horror territory. I also liked how it complemented McCall's character being referred to as a ghost which was clearly seen in those stealthy action sequences and lighting.
On that thought, I have to mention the beautiful cinematography here by Robert Richardson. He beautifully captured the Southern Italy setting and the sense of dread on the streets at night. It made for a great atmosphere that complemented the story which ultimately made me love the film even more. Lastly, I would like to mention the performances in this film. Denzel Washington brought his A-game and gave his best in this final chapter. Dakota Fanning was great and while having minimal screentime made up with her reunion with Denzel Washington. Furthermore, Andrea Dodero and Andrea Scarduzio made for a menacing and great pair on screen. All in all, "The Equalizer 3" is a solid and great conclusion to what already is a great franchise.
