An epic, original and fantastic sci-fi film!

Gareth Edwards is who I consider a great director. He made some great and epic sci-fi films like Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). When I heard the news that he was going to direct a new sci-fi film, I was eagerly waiting to see what the film was going to be. "The Creator" follows Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, who is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war and mankind itself.

Madeleine Yuna Voyles (Alphie) in The Creator (2023)

We're now in an era where we are craving for something new and original to pop up. That was fortunately the case here as Edward Gareth had created a very deep and interesting sci-fi universe. The lore built here was fantastic and so were the characters. Each character was very interesting to see and grow throughout the film. I personally think that this was all achieved thanks to some great writing. Despite all the minor issues, I still enjoyed the story told here despite being generic and falling into the sci-fi tropes. Well, where's the "unique" aspect of the film? The film does something smart and poses a very interesting question to the viewers: What if robots lost but humans won? I think that was brilliantly executed by Edwards here and that's what kept me from rating it any lower than this. Furthermore, I would like to mention the performances here. Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Alphie stole the show here. She was excellent as she perfectly portrayed her complex character. Unfortunately, I still cannot bear watching John David Washington. He always gives the same performance in each film and this one is his weakest performance to date! Ken Watanabe and Gemma Chan did an equally great job too. My only wish is that I wanted them to have more screen time as they are great actors.

John David Washington (Joshua) in The Creator (2023)

Moreover, I have to mention the cinematography and the score here. Firstly, I would like to start with the cinematography here by Greg Fraiser and Oren Soffer. This film is visually breathtaking. My mind cannot comprehend how good this movie looks and how well it was shot considering that it was done with the Sony FX3 which anyone can buy for no more than 4 000$. This is a huge achievement in cinema (at least for me) and the industry should learn from this. Greg Fraiser and Oren Soffer did a phenomenal job at capturing the whole vibe of this beautiful dystopian world. Secondly, I would like to praise Hans Zimmer's score here. This man is a master at his craft and never fails to disappoint. It's epic and gives a sense of scale to the project. The cinematography as well as the sensational score worked perfectly together and gave an amazing end result. Lastly, I would like to mention how good of a director Gareth Edwards is. With an 80-million-dollar budget, the film is unbelievably good-looking when it comes to the VFX and CG department. Each frame is packed with details when it comes to how the robots realistically behave and how excellent the CG models are. In a time where we have 200 million dollars thrown into a film, this feels like a step in the right direction. All in all, despite its minor flaws, "The Creator" is an ambitious and excellently crafted sci-fi film.
