Another generic MCU film!

If you've been keeping up with the box office and news, the MCU hasn't been doing well recently. We've had one good MCU film this year which was "Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3". Well, was "The Marvels" a hit or a miss? "The Marvels" follows Carol Danvers who gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe.

Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) in The Marvels (2023)

First off, let's start with the writing here. For the millionth time, I beg Kevin Feige to hire good writers and give them enough time to come up with something good. The writing was mediocre, to say the least, and the villain was the weakest in the MCU history. Marvel still can't have a good villain in their films and that's a big problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Furthermore, and I hate to say this but the silly jokes that are supposed to be "funny" are still littered throughout the film. Additionally, the stakes were low and so was the action. On that thought, despite the good camera movement in those action sequences, they felt too disjointed because of the whole story. While the concept is interesting, I wish they would have gone in a different direction here. Additionally, the short runtime of 90 minutes did the film an injustice rather than a favor. A big storyline like this shouldn't be crammed into 90 minutes and that's why an additional 40 minutes would have made a big difference in my opinion.

Zawe Ashton (Dar-Benn) in The Marvels (2023)

Last but not least, I have to praise Iman Vellani's performance in the film as she was a marvel (pun intended) to watch on screen. She loves playing Ms. Marvel as she's always charismatic and energetic on screen. Brie Larson and Teyonnah Paris did an overall good job of portraying their characters. Unfortunately, Zawe Ashton's performance was mediocre at best and was exaggerated in some scenes which left a bad impression on me. Finally, I have to praise those cat sequences. Those flerken are flearkin cute and definitely stole the show with how good they were. I mean there's a whole poster dedicated to them! What more can you ask? Overall, I would only recommend watching "The Marvels" if you have 90 minutes to spend.
