Wonka
Rating:
The most surprising film of the year!
Ladies and gentlemen, Paul King has done it again! Having seen the awful marketing of this film, I entered the theater with 0 expectations and came out extremely satisfied with how this film turned out to be! “Wonka” follows young chocolatier Willy Wonka manages to change the world, one delectable bite at a time.

We’ve already seen two adaptations of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory adapted to the big screen and one thing was left unexplored which was how all this came to life. Paul King explored Wonka’s origin story in a very whimsical and beautiful way and while it may not be that good of a story it certainly was entertaining to watch. It was surprisingly entertaining and quite emotional which was a surprise to me! The world established here is certainly marvelous! From the spectacular set design to its characters, all felt very magical! Moreover, all the characters had a fun and weird side to them despite all of them acting in a very cartoonish way which is one of my complaints with this film. I wish they weren’t that cartoonish or silly. Additionally, and while I may be from the minority here, I really enjoyed those musical numbers! Each of them felt fitting to the characters and the overall tone of the film. Now what wasn’t that magical here was that weird-looking CGI. There was one particular scene that made me question the budget of this film. It felt cheap and did a disservice to the film.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room. Timothée Chalamet was fine in his role as Wonka. I wouldn’t say that he’s the right fit for this role but I would say that he did an okay job. He's not the most comedic actor to portray a funky Wonka and that was perhaps a missed opportunity to not bring someone else because the rest of the cast did a phenomenal job. Keegan Micheal-Key, Tom Davis, and Rowan Atkinson were the stars of the show. They kept the film funny due to their charismatic nature and funny acting! Trust me when I say that this is one of the most entertaining films of the year. It’s funny, a bit emotional, and downright magical! Oh, and this movie will make you crave chocolate so keep that in mind!
