When Evil Lurks
Rating:
The most surprising horror film of the year!
Well, that was perhaps the most disturbing/shocking film of the year! I went into this film knowing nothing and came out disturbed by how good it was. When Evil Lurks follows the residents of a small rural town who discover that a demon is about to be born among them, they desperately try to escape, but it may be too late.

First, let’s discuss my major issue with this film. This film feels so uneven with its story. The first two acts were amazing but then comes the third act! The third act was a huge mess! I did not like how the story went nor how it handled some of the characters. It feels like it’s a small piece of what is a bigger final act and that’s a bit of shame. Furthermore, I really hated the dumb decisions made in the story specifically in the final act. It just felt wrong and out of place! The dumb decisions also made for some loose plot threads that are yet to be unresolved and I hate that. If they hadn’t taken their time in the final act they could have saved an additional 20 minutes and could have made the film even better.

On the bright side of things let’s talk about what makes this film such a good horror film. This film made my jaw drop with its shocking and unpredictable moments. On that thought, this is not a film for the squeamish nor for the weak-hearted. The film slowly builds an uneasy tension with its disturbing and grisly images that’ll surely stay with you after finishing the film and that is its key to scaring you. Furthermore, I really liked how they tackled demonic possessions here! It feels like an R-rated and better version of A Quiet Place. Finally, I would like to praise the performances here. Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón were both phenomenal in their role as brothers, despite its final act When Evil Lurks is a bloody and scary ride that’s certainly worth it.
