The best horror film of the year!
For the past few weeks, there has been an undeniable buzz around “Longlegs”. Talks of it being the next “Silence of the Lambs” and the best horror film of the year got me excited to check it out. Well, was it worth the hype? Simply put, “Longlegs” is the best horror film of the year! “Longlegs” follows FBI Agent Lee Harker who is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case that takes an unexpected turn, revealing evidence of the occult.
First and foremost, I must praise Nicolas Cage’s masterful performance. He’s terrifying as the infamous serial killer here! What made his performance all the more memorable was his charisma! He makes Longlegs creepier and in a weird way funny! What added to his character was that creepy makeup! My heart stopped when he first appeared on screen and I bet it will for you too! Praise should also go towards Maika Monroe and Alicia Witt. Monroe once again showcases excellent acting skills but Witt completely took me by surprise! She delivered one hell of a performance *literally* and I would love to see her in more horror stuff! Story-wise this film has it all! It’s in a way a spiritual successor to “Silence of the Lambs” sprinkled with some supernatural stuff. Everything about the narrative just worked so well and made for a devilish experience! On that thought, I have to discuss the supernatural elements. Most of the supernatural elements here worked for me, but it may not work well with some viewers.
What made the experience even more hellish was the cinematography! Praise should go towards Andrés Arochi who did a phenomenal job here. You could feel a sense of dread and eeriness in every frame here! Last but not least, I must praise Oz Perkins’ direction here! This film is oozing with style! From the moment the movie started till it ended, I was spellbound! There are obvious inspirations from Lynch’s Twin Peaks and Fincher's filmography and that put a big smile on my face! Oh, and word of advice, temper your expectations before entering this film and you’ll have a devilishly good time! In a nutshell, "Longlegs" is not only the best horror film of the year but one of the best horror films I've seen!
