Bong Joon Ho is back!

6 years after dropping one of the best films in the history of cinema, Bong Joon Ho makes a return with his first American feature! There were a lot of concerns, and I am happy to report that Ho did not miss and delivered one hell of a film! "Mickey 17" follows a disposable employee who is sent on a human expedition to colonize the ice world Niflheim. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of its memories intact.

Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17) in Mickey 17 (2025)

First off, I must discuss the story and the writing here. While I had concerns that it was Bong Joon Ho's first time writing in English, I was proven wrong. The writing didn't come off as cringe and was great. As for the story, I really enjoyed what Ho did here. The world and the characters were quite interesting, and each of them offered complexity. And while I would have preferred to have more lore given to us,  I still really enjoyed what we got here. The story is by no means something new, and the important thing is not "What you do," it's "How you do it," and Bong Joon Ho did it in the best possible way. His magic is still present in the film, and as someone who's familiar with his filmography, I had a big smile on my face. Furthermore, the plot raised some interesting and thought-provoking questions, which made me appreciate it even more.

Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17) in Mickey 17 (2025)

Now comes the most important part, which is to praise Robert Pattinson, who delivered one of the best performances ever. This guy is an acting genius! His ability to act out not one but two completely different versions of himself blew me away! Praise should also go towards Toni Colette and Mark Ruffalo, who also gave some excellent performances. Overall, while it might not be Bong Joon Ho's best work, it still is a very good film with tons of serious and funny moments in it.
