A dull, long and boring sequel

I remember watching "Shazam!" back in 2019 and enjoying the film. Well after a long wait, we finally got the sequel, "Shazam! Fury Of The Gods". Well, does it stand up to its predecessor? "Shazam! Fury Of The Gods" follows Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids who are still learning how to juggle teenage life with their adult superhero alter egos. When a vengeful trio of ancient gods arrives on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Shazam and his allies get thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of the world.

The first one had a genuinely great story that was funny and enjoyable. The sequel unfortunately featured a generic and predictable story that follows the same superhero formula which took away from my enjoyment. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" which was undeniably one of the worst films of this year due to its unreasonable amount of silly jokes thrown at you.  Another thing that annoyed me here was the presence of some dumb moments and that is my biggest gripe with the film. Zachary Levi who plays Shazam should act as an 18-year-old who's supposedly a grown-up with responsibilities. Well, he clearly portrayed his character in a poor way which led me to dislike it even more.

Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu in Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Moreover, other moments had me roll my eyes due to the illogical and dumb reasoning that the film follows. Sure the silly and dumb moments were present here but I still enjoyed the film thanks to its funny nature. Oh and that cameo near the end which was spoiled by Warner Bros. was useless and had no purpose to the story! On the bright side of things, the cast as well as the action saved this film from being catastrophic. Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer are still fantastic in their role. Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, as well as Rachel Zegler, were also great in their role. Now the action in this film was great and what helped it, even more, was the cool CG dragon. The CG artists did a great job at designing it! Furthermore, I would like to mention that I absolutely loved the small horror touches to the creatures and to the film in general.

Lucy Liu in Shazam! Fury of the Gods

This film is surely not perfect but "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" left such a bad taste in my mouth that I couldn't help but enjoy this one. If "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3" is not great then I'll truly believe that superhero movies are dead. Hopefully, we'll be getting some better DC films with James Gunn now at the helm.
