Special thanks to Hulu and Searchlight Pictures for sending me an early screener of the film.
The best way to describe this film is a Wes Anderson Rom-Com. I absolutely adore Wes Anderson's approach to filmmaking so there was absolutely no reason for me not to watch this. "Rye Lane" follows Yas and Dom, two twenty-somethings both reeling from bad break-ups, who connect over the course of an eventful day in South London - helping each other deal with their nightmare exes, and potentially restoring their faith in romance.
I went into this film blindfolded and was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It definitely was a pleasant and welcomed surprise, especially with the lack of great romantic comedies these couple of years. It's a simple movie that doesn't overstay its welcome and this is why I love it. Clocking at 79 minutes the film never loses its momentum or its quirkiness. These past romantic comedies have had a tendency of being unfunny and boring which was not the case here. The humor as well as the story were really good. I found myself laughing often which was definitely a surprise here.
I loved how Yas and Dom's stories intertwined with each other which made the film so believable and real in a way. This of course couldn't have been achieved without the help of a great cast. David Jonsson and Vivian Oprah as our duo perfectly portrayed their character. They were oozing with energy on screen which made it a joy to watch them talk and interact with each other. Finally, I want to mention the cinematography by Ollan Collardy. Wow! This film is beautifully shot and I couldn't keep my eyes off it which I think is important here due to the nature of the film.
If you're looking for 79 minutes to spare then I would strongly recommend watching this funny, quick, and lovely film especially if you're a fan of romantic comedies!
